Egyptian citizens have taken to the streets of Cairo. Tens of thousands of anti-government protesters have launched an all out attack on the Egyptian government and police fired back with rubber bullets, tear gas and water cannons.

The protests have been the biggest challenge of authoritarian President Hosni Mubarak’s 30 year-rule. Egyptian citizens are demanding Mubarak’s resignation and venting their rage due to years of government neglect, poverty, unemployment and rising food prices.

Violence escalated in two cites outside of Cairo Thursday when anti-government protesters torched a fire station, stole weapons and turned them on police. In central Cairo, demonstrators burned tires and hurled stones at police. Protests continue to intensify throughout the country.

Yesterday, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak announced that a new government is on the way, but the president failed to offer his own resignation upsetting citizens further. Mubarak says he will appoint a new government today.
